We visited this beautiful little town as we heard that the bakeries here are famous for their pies and vanilla slice.
Ross Village Bakery ~This bakery specialises in hand crafted sourdough breads ,savouries ,Scallop Pies and the famous Vanilla Slice. I had the Lamb, mint and pea pie something different and Paul had the standard steak pie. We also enjoyed a Vanilla Slice which was delicious. This historic bakery was built in the 1860’s and has been operating as a bakery for over 100 years. It is a very popular bakery so get in early or have patience as everyone is after their prized piece of happiness.
There is so much to see in this small quaint town i had a walk down the Main Street and took in all the old historic houses that line the streets with their well kept gardens. There are 2 bright red vintage telephone boxes located in this small town. One of them is still working. The story behind them was a initiative from the locals that tourist could visit these booths and listen to old stories of this town and capture many stories and life changing events that have happened from the 1930s to now.
We also visited the Female Factory on the outskirts of town which is rich in history of female convicts. It was built in the early 1840s. The Ross Factory was one in four women’s prisons that operated during Tasmania’s convict era. This is now a protected historic site. Free Admission opening hours 10-3pm.
The Ross Bridge is a sandstone bridge that was completed in 1836 and is the third oldest bridge in Australia. The bridge took 5 years to complete with convict labour .The bridge is located on the outskirts of Ross but within walking distance from town.
This is a great little town to see as a day visit.
