After a very early morning start leaving Mildura at 7am we arrived at Broken Hill at what we thought was 1030am only to be told we had to wind our watches back 1/2 hour due to this tiny area of New South Wales set on South Australia time. Seems a bit odd but it is because many years ago the first train line established into Broken Hill was from Adelaide. There you go a bit of history and extra time in this predominately Iron ore, Silver mining town for us to explore.

The camping site we stayed at was 1/2 hour out of town. It was a boutique kind of camping ground which was called Broken Hill Outback Resort. It is relatively new and had a Restaurant and Bar attached in the main homestead which was right up my alley. Not to far to walk home from a good evening. The meals here are fantastic and the prices are very reasonable.

Broken Hill township is close to 18,000 and hosts 8 open pubs. Back in the day when all the mines were in full operation there were 72 ….quite a few watering holes to quench your thirst on a hot day. We decided to visit one of these pubs and went to the Palace Hotel where some scenes of Priscilla Queen of the desert were filmed. They still have the big silver stiletto that was used in the film in the pub foyer area and the stage has been kept the same sequins and all.

Driving around the town itself you can see all the mines that are still in operation but look very run down.

We spent a day going out to look at a mine near Silverton called Daydream Mine. We were once again caught out with the time as we had to go forward 1/2 hour into NSW time crazy. We did make it in time and had a very informative underground mine tour followed by scones ,cream jam and tea. Very random but absolutely delicious. You also got to pat the very colourful horses that lived out at the mine area which were really unique and cute. We then continued our day journey on to Silverton town to see where the Mad Max films were made and where Mad Max 3 will be filmed starting in May. It is a very rough rugged town with old broken down cars everywhere. It also has a few stone churches which may be used as props in Mad MAX as no one lives out here in this small community.

After a very busy morning we thought we would visit the pub in this small town. We were excited about going to have some pub grub for lunch but left disappointed that the food did not look that appetising so went back to the caravan park for a good home made lunch. Another tourist attraction here in Silverton is The Mad Max Museum. Unfortunately the day we wanted to visit was closed due to Covid. We did get to see a few of the vehicles they used in the film out the front of the museum and throughout the town which was very cool. Silverton also has a lot of art galleries and we brought an Emu Painting from a famous artist John Dynon known for his outback paintings. It looks great hung up in Taj with our outback colour scheme it blends in well.

There is so much history in Broken hill and there is a lot to see and do. I would recommend 2 days minimum to look at the attractions they have for you as a tourist to enjoy. I really had a great time here the camping ground was an awesome experience. The grassy green camp in the middle of red outback dirt sold me. . On to the next adventure again in outback NSW
