Welcome to Bruny Island what a place to come and explore there is so much to do here. We stayed here for 3 days could have done more and experienced the remote wilderness of this small island. Bruny Island is located off the Southern Coast of Tasmania and Island off an Island.

To get to the Island you will have to take the ferry across which takes 20 minutes. Cost for a caravan + Car $113 return. They depart Kettering the mainland every half hour. Our first stop was the iconic bread fridge which is located on the main road. The fridge contains freshly made bread, sour dough, sultana, flat bread. It is a unique concept and very well received by tourist as there are limited shops on the Island.

Our first place to explore on the Island was the Light House. Cape Bruny lighthouse is an inactive lighthouse located at the southern tip of Bruny Island. They offer daily tours so you can take in the spectacular views looking out to the Southern and Tasmanian Sea’s.

Bruny Island Cruises.

What a tour cost $175pp 3 hours. We went out with Bruny Island Cruises for a well informed and priced day out along the southern coast of Bruny island. This part of the island can only be accessed by boat as there are no roads or walks along this part of the island. The waters surrounding Bruny Island are home to remarkable wildlife. You can see sea eagles soaring above the crags pods of dolphins surfing the wave and albatross wheeling on the wind and skimming the swells.

During the months between September to December and May to July you may be able to see a humpback whale migrating north. You also get the chance to get up close with the seals they may look cute but they are not fans of humans so patting them if you can get that close is not wise. The cruise takes you down the Southern side of the island and has towering ancient Jurassic dolerite sea cliffs and hidden coves. Rug up it gets pretty cold out there on the Southern Ocean.

We visited the cheese, bread and beer place and ordered a platter of cheese for $55 with 3 cheeses. You can also go and have a cheese tasting so you can choose what type of cheeses you would like to take home or make up on your cheese platter.

Across the road there is the Honey Shop where you can taste up to 10 different types of honey. We brought the cream and bush honey very tasty goes well with our bread from Bruny Fridge.

Bruny Island has so many walks and hikes you can take around the island, we chose the Fluted Cape Walk ,Truganini Lookout and Cape Queen Elizabeth Track. The walks can range from grade 2-3 and average around 4 hours minimum. Our favourite walk was the Queen Elizabeth Track as the trail passes two lagoons before you get to the rewarding natural archway against the white silica sand from the beach.

The Penguin Rookery is a must to do visit. The views are spectacular as you look down towards the neck which is a small road that connects North Bruny to South. You are not permitted on the beaches after sunset to sunrise as the penguins make their way up to their burrows to rest at night. You can visit the rookery at night and can see the little penguins making their way up the beach no torches or lights are allowed as this will scare them. Hopefully the moon is out and you can see these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat.

Allow a couple of days to soak in everything this island has to offer. There are day tours from Hobart which are around $265 for the day including lunch if you are pressed for time.
