Mole Creek is located in Mersey Valley and is based on the edge of the Great Western Tiers. Mole Creek is 75kms west of Launceston which is an hours drive. This place is known for its Leatherwood honey 🍯 factory and variety of hikes, cave systems and the Tasmanian Devils. We stayed for one night and free camped behind the Mole Creek Pub. We chose Trowunna Wildlife Park and Marakoopa Caves to explore as they were both near by.

Trowunna Wildlife Park

This Park is a privately owned and has been in operation since 1979. The park claims they have the largest population of endangered Tasmanian Devils and a remarkable collection of marsupials, birds and reptiles. The wildlife park sits on 70 acres with 3 areas and living environments for the animals. These areas are alpine ,forest, coastal. Upon entering the park you will be greeted by the Forester Kangaroos which Rome around freely. They are very friendly you can feed them pellets purchased from the shop for $3. On the day we visited they had the wombats out that you can pat also very friendly. Keks the Wombat was saved as her mum was no where to be found …..and she was only a baby and would not survive. They will look after her until she is old enough to be released back into the wild.

The Tasmanian devils add character to the wildlife sanctuary as the juvenile devils are very playful and noisey. Beware they will rip your arm off if you dare to put it in the enclosure. The devil is a carnivorous marsupial and is characterised by its stocky and muscular build, black fur and sharp teeth. They are extremely loud and have a keen sense of smell and ferocity when feeding. We were there at feeding time no table manners going on there as they ripped their dead prey apart.

The sanctuary is also involved in five seperate breeding programs to ensure the survival of these threatened endangered species.

Allow a couple of hours to roam freely around the park and enjoy being up close to the animals.

Marakoopa Cave

The Mole Creek Karst National park is where the Marakoopa Cave is located. The cave is the largest public display in Australia. The Great Cathedral and glow worm 45 minute guided tour will take you to the largest public chamber. From here you can view the sparkling crystals, flowstone, stalactites and stalagmites along the way. The gardens feature formations and contrasting colours.

We were in awe with the glow worms they have some interesting facts about them. The larval stage is the only stage in their life cycle they can glow. The glow worm adults only live for 1-2 days for the female and 3-5 days for the male. The adults cannot eat only the larvae are able to ingest food. The adult worm looks slightly larger than a mosquito.

There are a few tours that run daily. If you are claustrophobic then this is not for you as you have to squeeze through some small area’s .

Mole Creek Hotel

We stayed at the back of the pub and free camped for one night as it is a popular place for tourists to visit. The Tassie Tiger Bar is home to the world’s largest Tasmanian Tiger. The bar is dedicated to preserving the story of Australia’s most elusive animal. The bar is filled with artwork, news articles ,artifacts and stories. They offer hotel accommodation and good pub grub and of course the beer is flowing. We had a great chat to the owner Doug he’s a proud kiwi now a proud Tasmanian
