Bridport is a small coastal town located in the north-east coast of Tasmania. The town is known for the production of rope, twine, netting and sailcloth. This small town with a population of 1700 is a vibrant town during summer and can triple in population as there are so many beaches along the coastline with the council camping ground hosting guests from all over.

Bridport has a wide, vibrant and eclectic cultural mix of events and exhibitions and entertainment . The beaches are safe for swimming all year round and there are many coastal walks you can do. The Trent water area at the entrance to the town is a tidal estuarine environment and is also home to native shorebirds and aquatic life. We had a chance to take the kayak out and go fishing as it is a very sheltered area for swimming and boating activities.

Ledgerwood

We decided to take a day trip to Ledgerwood which is a 1/2 hour drive south east from Bridport, to see the carved memorial trees. The trees line the Main Street of this small town and are sculptured into WW1 soldiers in Dorset. They were planted in honour of fallen soldiers. A report in 2001 indicated that the trees were no longer safe and the memorials would be lost. By 2004 the community decided that each stump would be carved into the likeness of each soldier. A chainsaw carver Eddie Freeman of the small town of Ross was asked by the committee to sculpt the masterpieces.

Various scenes and stories are now displayed next to each tree to tell the stories of our fallen hero’s. Most of them were so young average age 20 years of age. Well worth the time to take a look at this part of history in a different way.

Piper’s Brook Vineyard

Pipers Brook Vineyard is located in Tamar Valley wine country and is a leading winery located in the northern part of Tasmania. The winery was established in 1974 and is known as the cool-climate pioneer for fine wines in Australia. The vineyard is located close to the Bass Straight and benefits from the cool maritime climate and rich volcanic soils. The cellar door offers tastings of Pipers Brook,Ninth island and Kreglinger wines and the cafe on site matches these drops perfectly with a light Australian menu.

We chose to have a cheese board with our wine tasting $55 for a charcuterie board $15 for a tasting. The wine food and drive in through the vineyard is a great experience. They also have Janz winery on site owned by the same owner of Piper’s Brook, unfortunately they were closed on the day we visited.

Piper’s Brook is open every day except for Christmas Day so there is no excuse to come and visit this place.

If you are going to visit Bridport and want to relax and take in the sea views allow two days like us and add in a few little trips to break up the day.
