The town of derby is located amongst ruffed hills and forest in the north east of Tasmania . The township is lined with miners cottages which are hired out as weekend accomodation. Derby has been put on the map as a mountain bikers haven or mountain bikers keen to explore the Blue Derby network of world-class tracks and trails. We arrived on a weekend that they had racing on and there were bikes galore everywhere you looked. There are 3 bike shops in this town where you can hire a bike or pay extra and they will send you on a self guided tour through the tracks and pick you up at a chosen destination , sometimes the pub good way to end your day of riding.
The town has 3 pubs , cafes and restaurants to ensure the tourist are all fed and watered.
A bit about this small town derby. Derby was a tin mining town in the 1800s. The Krushka brothers discovered a large load of tin and set up a mine to ensure the future of this town and region. They worked hard to get the town of derby on the map. Fast forward to 2015 and some other brothers with a broader spectrum started making mountain biking trails. The little town of derby is a town that does not sleep . It is now centre stage for the trails, bush walks, swimming in the lakes and more.
If you want a more relaxing time to enjoy this town after visiting the cafes you can enjoy a sauna at derby lake sauna located right on the lake. To enjoy this unique experience you can book on Line @ floating sauna lake derby. Visit the derby spa sauna for pricing.

Little blue lake is located between Derby and Gladstone and is a natural blue lake resulting from the pioneering mining days. We visited early morning and the aqua blue colours of the lake were absolutely amazing. The colour comes from the mineral base and as much as it is inviting to swim in, it is advised not to due to the minerals in the water

Mount William National Park (above) pictures
Mount William National Park is home to an abundance of kangaroos, wombats and wallabies. There are a few walks to the summit approximately 3.5km return. Grade 2-3 . There is also the Eddystone point lighthouse along the way which is well worth a visit. The lighthouse was built in 1889 and still has the keepers cottages which you can stay in as holiday accomodation. From the light house you can see down the coast to the famous bay of 🔥 fires and Binalong .

Blue Tier Giant Walk (Above)
The blue tier giant walk is an hour loop and houses the Big Tree. It is the widest living tree in Australia and stands at 60 meters high and 19.4 meters wide. It would take 15 people with their arms spread around it to give you an idea how big the tree really is. It is a grade 2-3 walk take your time there are so many big trees 🌲 fauna and wildlife to take in.

Historic Hotel Weldborough 30 minute drive from Derby. Free camping coin operated showers and nice pub meals.

My little camping buddy neighbour ( Arlo ) i could not resist having a cuddle or two with him.

Derby Tunnel (Above)
The derby tunnel is a fascinating remnant of the regions Tin mining days. It was built in the 1880s by one miner to move tailings from his lease beneath to another’s miners lease. Today you can walk through this tunnel which offers an array of yellow and blue lights along the walkway. You can walk through or bike. We chose to go first thing in the morning to avoid the traffic of mountain bikers. It was probably a lot safer too.
If you want to come and visit derby and its surrounds allow 3 days, there is so much to do and see.
