St Helens is located on the east coast of Tasmania and is an adventure paradise that provides perfect locations for snorkelling, biking and hiking.
We spent 2 days here and visited St Columbia, Halls and Fern Tree Falls. They all have their own history and beauty. Most of the walks a short around 1hour return and are grade 2-3 in some parts. St Columbia Falls was my favourite this is a 30 minute drive from St Helens and a 15 minute walk down to the falls. The base of the falls is pretty spectacular the walk takes you through cool and shady rainforest with tree ferns everywhere. The water comes from the South George River tumbling down in a series of steep cascades.
On your way out to the falls we visited Pub in the Paddock, it’s a quaint little pub that offers free camping and good pub grub. Just down the road from the pub is Pyengana Dairy Company. Pyengana is the aboriginal word for the meeting of two rivers.
You get to view the cheese makers making cheese and also watch the cows get a good back scratch. We had a cheese platter a mixture of blue ,mature cheddar, cloth bound cheddar cost $22 which is very reasonable and enough for 2 people.
Bay of fires is located 30 minutes out of St Helens and is a popular tourist spot. The gorgeous coastline stretches over 50 kilometers from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone point in the north. The mixture of the azure blue water and the white sand is a spectacular sight to see. This place is also famous for its orange lichen-cloaked boulders and rock formations.
The population of the town is over 2200 it is considered to be one of the main towns on the east coast. They have a few cafes here that offer fresh produce and seafood. We had breakfast at a cafe named The Lifebuoy . The food is pretty amazing we came here for breakfast 2 days in a row. We stayed just out of town at Tasman caravan park. It is a relatively new park with great facilities.
We stayed in a bunk house which was very plush for a cost of $140 per night. St Helen’s is well worth a visit allow a couple of days as some of the drives to some of the attractions are out of town.
