Bicheno town is located on the east coast of Tasmania and is central to Freycinet National Park and some of the best wineries. It is also halfway between Hobart and Launceston so is a popular place for tourist. The town is primarily a fishing port and a beach haven.
We had lunch at the Lobster Shack. I had 1/2 lobster with garlic and Paul had gummy fish with chips. Well worth a visit they also have an ice creamery attached to it if you have enough room for dessert 🍨.
You can also visit the Bicheno Blow Holes next door to the Lobster shack . Best time to go is at high tide. You will see a spectacular spray of seawater. The rock formation in some areas are coloured bright orange by lichens. This is very common along the east coast.
There are a few walks along the coast you can do. The most popular and difficult trail in Bicheno is Douglas Apsley National Park Gorge Loop. This also has some rock climbing in it so if you’re not into this try the foreshore walks which are a bit easier on the legs.
There are 2 wineries which we visited near to Bicheno. Devils Corner a popular place . They have a wide selection of wines and an incredible view of the coast. They also have an amazing menu for you to choose from . I had a platter of oysters with the devils corner Savignon Blanc. The other winery just down the road was Freycinet Vineyards. I came home with a few bottles of red for my Tasmanian cellar door.
On the outskirts of Bicheno is East Coast Natureworld. It is a premier wildlife park where you can see the Tasmanian devil in its natural habitat.
Bicheno is well worth visiting with sparkling ocean beaches, beautiful coastal scenery and much loved fresh seafood.🦞
