Queenstown in Tasmania is located in a valley on the Western Slopes of Mount Owen. There is so much to do here but rug up it gets cold during Autumn and Winter. This place is the gateway to fishing lakes, national parks and wilderness areas. It also had the West Coast Railway which we booked on a 2hour train ride to learn the history of this mining town. The train ride is just under 2 hours and takes you through where the miners worked in the harsh conditions back then. The ride follows the queen river and is evident of mining as the water has a clay looking colour to it.There is a stopover that you can pan for gold or enjoy a scone with cream and a drink. This old steam train is the highlight of the town everyone stops and waves as we go through town. The cost for this ride is $40pp which is well worth it. The deluxe package is $80pp that includes champagne and canapés.
The town still has a lot of the original buildings. The paragon theatre which was built in 1933 has been restored inside and reopened in 2017 . Visitors come and enjoy the theatre in its original state that takes them back in time.
Queenstown also has the only AFL oval in Australia that surface is pebbles instead of grass. You can free camp around the outside of the oval for up to 7 days. This is a central place to park if you are going on tours or if you want to stay.
When you are leaving Queenstown the drive is quite steep as the town sits low in the valley. There are a couple of stops on the way up with spectacular views of the mines and the town.
We stopped at Montezuma Falls which is 10 mins out of town . The walk up to the falls takes around 20 minutes and the surrounding views are amazing
