Strahan is located in what they call the Wild West coast of Tasmania. It is also a former mining port on Macquarie Harbour. Now it is used for local fishermen , luxury yachts and Day time cruises.
We arrived later on in the day so missed out on the cruises or train ride on the west coast railway. We walked through this quaint little seaside town and walked along the water front. They have an amazing sawmill located right on the water called Morrisons Huon Pine Sawmill. The sawmill has been passed down and 4th generation still run the mill today .They have a very old saw cutting away most of the day. This mill specialises in Huon Timber which has a sappy perfume smell to it. There is so much history and is very interesting for me as we have recently had experience working in a Sawmill.
Their wood creations are pretty spectacular and the shop offers so many incredible wood creations. You can also purchase their wood if you cannot take back home they will courier anywhere in Australia for free. Great Bargain if you are a wood enthusiast.
We also visited the Huon Falls. Walk takes around 1/2 and hour return. The falls are not exactly the Niagara Falls just a trickle but the walk out there and the scenery is worth the visit.
There were many yachts, fishing/crayfish boats at the wharfs a hype of activities . It was so good to see all the old crayfish baskets they use to catch this delicacy of the ocean.
We had to visit one of the 2 pubs and have a drink and soak in some more history whilst looking out to the marina and boats.
Just down the road from Strahan is a place called Zeehan. This place is well known for the Spray Tunnel. The walk is approximately 6kms through the bush until you arrive at the tunnel. This tunnel was carved so that they could move ore from the mine. The tunnel is so dark when you enter and it takes time for your eyes to adjust. I managed to fall of the path and into the wall. This 100m walkway is now inhibited with glow worms. Well worth the walk and a visit.
NB ~ If you need fuel you have to go to the airport a couple of kms out of town. Very random
