Spirit of Tasmania is one of the most iconic way of travelling either as a passenger walk on or by car or other form of transportation.
The Spirit of Tasmania travels from Geelong in Melbourne or from Devonport Tasmania. A little bit of history about this boat, the Spirit of Tasmania #1 was constructed in Finland in 1998 and operated for four years in between Greece and Italy. Her maiden voyage across the well known Bass straight that holds Tasmania and The mainland together as part of Australia was on the 01/09/2001, around 23 years ago.
There is now new fleet that have been implemented into the very busy schedule as Tasmania is the place to be and very unique from the main land. It is like going over seas without requiring a passport.
The Spirit of Tasmania is reasonably priced and affordable should you want to take your car, van, motorhome or caravan on board.
We booked a year in advance as we were travelling over peak season.
Booked Caravan + Car 15m + 2 adults and a cabin both ways = $2500. Add on food on board and Alcohol well that’s a new budget.
The boat carters for everyone and has a movie theatre and play areas for the kids and the bar and restaurants for the parents.
The Voyage travels during the day which we came on and at night. There are strict quarantine laws but you can take your own food and refreshments on board , minus alcohol as the boat is licenced . Staying in the cabins was a god send perfect for the long 12 hour boat ride. There are all different types of cabins and pricing . We had a porthole cabin so could see the bass straight . It cost a little bit more but worth it. The cabin comes with single beds and a shower and toilet ….and privacy if the boat is full.
On the day crossings you can book the recliners for $39 pp . At night the recliners are free. You don’t have access to showers but Such a great deal .
