When we arrived off the Spirit of Tasmania late at night we decided to travel a bit further and ended up at Midway point aka Sulphur Creek. It was a 1/2 hour drive. We came to our first free camp on this journey and the camp was packed. Most of the campers were asleep so as we manoeuvred our way around with the bells and whistles going off in the car we finally found a spot….on the driveway who cares, free camp is just that.
This camp is right across from the beach and it was such a blessing to wake up too. There are penguins near by unfortunately they are nocturnal and only come out once sun is down. I was not going to really get amongst it and go find a penguin at that time of the night.
The little town of Penguin is located 4kms North from Sulphur Creek where we are staying and has everything except the major supermarkets. There is a IGA here should you need anything , and the town of Burnie is 6kms West and has all the major Supermarkets
We also had a chance to go visit some of the local wineries pretty spectacular there is a Tasmanian wine trail you can follow Tasting Trail Tasmania that will guide you through what the north west has to offer access the interactive map at tastingtrail.com.au
The town itself sits right on the coast and this small town is a buzz with all the locals….they are so friendly . We walked into town and had a coffee and had the train pass us by as it goes through Penguin.
A little bit about why the town is called Penguin , this area hosts penguin rookeries that are common along the less populated ares of the west coast.
I would highly recommend this area to relax and chill out before you make your way around Tasmania .
There are no ammenities or cooking facilities here. There are toilets located 2kms down the road if required.
