Goondiwindi pronounced Gunda-A-windy is known as the border crossing of South Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The meaning of this town is resting place for birds. With the location of this town being on the border there is so much to explore in both states.

Today this town is well known for its rich cattle and sheep grazing area. The town sits on the banks of the Macintyre River and junction to five major highways. We stayed 3 days here and enjoyed its very relaxing community spirit. The Showgrounds where we stayed was located just out of town and we were lucky to stay over the time they had a camp draft for horses. It was quite a shock when we opened our caravan door up at 6am and we were greeted by cows and friskey horses.

You can choose to immerse yourself in all the attractions this town has to offer or travel further to towns across the border like Texas and Inverell which are rich in their own history.

If you visited this region many years ago this place was predominantly wool and wheat focussed with tobacco continuing until the late 1970’s. Today there is a diversity os some of Australia’s best wheat, beef, wool and cotton. The region also specialises in oats, barely, sorghum, soybeans, chickpeas all grown locally and are household names. So this town offers so much from its rich soils. We did buy some local meat from the butcher here in town and enjoyed it immensely. Buy local they say its the only way to go.

This place is suitable for everyone and if your an Outdoorsy type there are walks and a lot of places to spot the feathered friends (birds) as there are so much maze and water that attracts them to this region.

There is a natural heritage water park which is a 210 ha recreational park purpose built for waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing and boating. Off these banks are swimming areas and places to take your family for picnics. Before visiting always check gre.qld.gov.au/notices for updates on conditions.

If your into great food visit The Larder it is a small town favourite with big flavours . They offer fresh homemade healthy meals and stock a wide range of providore staples. This is one of the locals favourite places for coffee and food so be prepared to queue for this experience.

This place offers a few different styles of accomodation if you wanted to stay here. There are caravan parks, motels, cottage home-stays, pubs and farms and of course epic show grounds to stay.

If you want to come and visit this region and have a few days to spare in your itinerary visit the Big Gundy Guide which will help you organise to see the best places this region has to offer.

Sadly this is my last post from this Epic trip that we have loved sharing with you. This is the first around this vast land …many more to come.

Our next adventure starts out on Lady Elliot Island in December 2022 which i will share on Instagram and put some blogs in.

So after 10 months of being on the road we have had the most amazing time. If you asked me my favourite place I couldn’t tell you, they are all unique to themselves and offer different beauty and experiences. All i can say is get out and explore even if it’s literally in your back yard.

Life is to Short. Peace out until my next adventures thank you for following. Paulie, Nana Darls, Tucker and Boy x
