This small town of Peterborough is located mid north of South Australia and close to the border of New South Wales. The town centre itself is so untouched with most of its old buildings still in operation today…just. We stayed one night here so it was only a quick stop over before we crossed the mighty border.
The town once again relies on tourism and as a town on route to either South Australia or New South Wales the roads in this town are packed with visitors.
The main attraction of this town is the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre. If you are an avid railway enthusiast then parting with $25 pp is an absolute bargain.Opening hours are between 9-5 daily with guided tours taken or light shows with dinner included starting at 7.30pm
This attraction was once a vast rail operation where 100 steam locomotives passed through each day before heading out to all corners of Australia. The history of this place and the trains are so interesting, Some of the carriages are turning 100 next year in 2023. On the guided tours you also get to experience the first class and second class carriages. There were also carriages that carried the Gold Bouillon and also one that went through the towns checking the health of babies. The nurse would work all day in her carriage and then go on to the next. Her sleeping quarter was attached. Long days for this nurse indeed.
This town location is also 10km from the coldest place in South Australia (Yongala) -9 in the winter of 1958. Average temperatures in Summer are 17-46 so a vast difference. The Indian Pacific train that you can travel from Broken Hill to Adelaide travels through this small town twice a week. We managed to see it pass when we were on the road to Broken Hill.
I would use this place to visit and stay/rest it is a nice little town very relaxed vibe.
