Kalgoorlie is known as a Legendary Western Australia gold mining town. As the saying goes there is nowhere else in Australia like Kalgoorlie. The town back in the days was previously known as Kekaya.

The city of Kalgoorlie is almost 600km east of Perth and has a population of 30,000 people including surrounding areas . It offers a relaxed lifestyle complemented by its diverse Natural environment. It can be very hot during the summer months 45+ and cool during the winter months. The town was designed to accomodate the miners as back in the first mining days there were approximately 90 pubs. Today there are still a few which offer very good pub grub.

We visited one just out of Kalgoorlie called Arrow Tavern which is 20km out of town. It is a true blue pub where you can go and write your name on the wall and this would not be classified as graffiti.

We visited a few places whilst here in the big K one being Hannah’s North Tourist Mine . It is well worth a visit and for an entry fee of $16 per adult , you will not be disappointed. The experience is a vibrant mix of gold rush history and modern day mining . Allow a couple of hours here as there is so much to see. There is also a bbq and picnic area for you to enjoy.

Walking up and down the streets of Kalgoorlie you are taken back in a time warp on the beautiful buildings that are still utilised today. The town clock stands in the centre of this town and the peak of it is pure gold. They are still paying this off today with the help of the local mining company.

We then went on to see the Super Pit. This is Australia’s largest open cut gold mine and is called KCGM Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines . You can only visit this mine site by tour only . The cost is $55 per adult and is well worth the money to get out into a mining site to see this vast pit and the vehicles on site. The pit is 1.5km wide ,3.5km long and 600m deep and the structure is big enough to be seen from space. On the tour you get to see the mine at work as well as learn about and how gold is made.

The biggest thing i did learn about Kalgoorlie is water back in the days was very scarce and at sometimes was worth more than gold . The water supply for this town is pumped all the way from Perth 565km away . This was established back in 1903. With lack of water supplies in the 1900s brought major health issues with hygiene and preparation of food. It also brought high suicide due to poverty, sickness and living conditions. Imagine working for 15hours underground with barely having anything to drink only to come above to 45deg+ and sleep on a floor in a tent.

Kalgoorlie has so much mining history and there is a few places to visit. Allow 3 days if your want to go on some tours . If your into the history of mining come visit Kalgoorlie
