Australind is an aquatic paradise and is Surrounded by water with the Brunswick and Collie Rivers to the east and south. To the west is the Leschenault Estuary where this main shopping precinct is located. This Gem is located 148km South of Perth and a short 12km drive from the coast of Brumby North .We spent 2 weeks here with our long time friends before we start out trip home to complete our first Lap of the Mighty OZ (Australia).
This town is central to the Southern end of Western Australia and you can take day trips to the many places that is close proximity like Margaret River, Dunsborough ,Busselton,Bunbury, Harvey and many more.
Gnomesville is located 40kms south east of Australind and is on Eastern Junction Roundabout of Wellington Mill Road and Ferguson Road. It is a very unique place to visit and people that visit are very curious. . Gnomesville started back in the 1990s when a local put a gnome in a tree with a hole in the Stump. Another person thought this gnome needs a friend and it grew from here, that is one of the many stories that has evolved on how this place started. Needless to stay it is a quirky but great place to visit. There are over 3000+ gnomes from all over the world and all walks of life. They are scattered along a creek bed that the kind locals of Wellington Mill look after. Expect to be in awe as there are so many with a lot of stories to take in so allow some time.
Just down the road from here is Wellington Dam, it is South Wests largest dam and built to supply the Collie River Irrigation and District. It is also famous for its Mural which is painted across the dam and is now the biggest dam mural in the world. This art took four months to complete the 8000 sq metre artwork, and was painted by internationally renowned artist Guido Van Helton. The mural is called Reflections. The images on the dam are of aboriginal children, migrant workers, families playing in the water. This was the brainwave of the now premiere Mark McGowan of Western Australia ,he sourced funding spoke to the locals with some resistance and it is now an iconic piece of artwork where tourists from all over can come and enjoy.
We took a day trip to Dunsborough, Cape Naturaliste,Yallingup, Smiths Beach, Injidup Beach and a lunch at Clancy’s Fish Pub which was magnificent.
We visited Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse which stands 100m high and looks out over the Indian Ocean . There are so many walks including the Cape to Cape for the avid hardcore walkers. The walk around cape Naturaliste is 4km grade 2, so it is here for many of us too enjoy. During the end of winter, beginning of Spring you can also see the migration of the whales going south for the cooler waters. We did see one in the distant on our walks along the coast which is always spectacular .There are also so many wild flowers dotted along the coast to enjoy in spring time.
The beaches along this western coastline are wild ,beautiful and also pristine with white sand. We visited many beaches along the way. Our favourite was Canal Rocks which is located in the Margaret River Region. You get to witness the crashing of the waves on to the granite coastline which we captured some amazing photos. You can choose to either if your brave have a swim here ,do a bit of rock climbing or enjoy the scenery. There is accomodation all along the coast if you wanted spend time and take in these views.
