Kalbarri is a small coastal town located at the mouth of the Murchison River on the West Coast. It is known for the seaside cliffs that dominate the coast line, estuary and its wild pelicans . Kalbarri is also located near the National Park which hosts so many gorges and the Murchison River.

The town of Kalbarri was named after an Aboriginal man from the Nanda tribe and is also the name of an edible seed. With 183,000 hectares to explore including the National Park it is a popular destination for the outdoor enthusiasts.

To the South of Kalbarri you can find Port Gregory which is famous for fishing and also the Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) Sometimes this lake can be bubblegum pink and sometimes lilac. It has to be a clear sunny day for the best viewing to capture these beautiful colours.

On the Southern end of Kalbarri you can find 7 coastal cliff sites that stretch 13kms along the rugged coast line. These national park sites are free to visit. The roads and pathways are well signposted to capture all the coastal views including migrating whales which we did see on our visit.

Kalbarri National Park entry is located 10kms from town. There is a small fee of $15 per vehicle to gain entry which is an absolute bargain. The park offers so many places to explore with many walks for you to choose from. Natures window was one of my favourite spots to visit as you look through the hole in the rock down to the Murchison River below. They also have a skywalk which takes you high above the river and many gorges below.

The small town also has daily feeding of their Wild Pelicans between 0845-915, 365 days are year. It was fun for the little kids and also the adults to learn about these birds and give them their breakfast, they were fun to watch. The town is also a coastal sea town and is well known for their seafood. I brought some crayfish and snapper from a road side fish monger. Of course they were delicious.

Our stay was met with rain and high winds. A few years ago the town had a cyclone come through unfortunately it caused a bit of damage. They are still working through with insurers but this did not take away the beauty that this place has to offer.

With 5 camping grounds this is a very popular place to visit. I could actually live here I enjoyed this little slice of paradise a lot. It is definitely a place to put on your travel itinerary you will love it.
