Kununurra is the first established town you will drive into from Northern Territory. It is a young town only established in the 1950s for people working on the irrigation scheme. It officially became Kununurra in the year 1961. It is also known as the gateway to the historic and immense Kimberley Region.

It is a great place to rest up and restock before you take on the vast region of the Northern Western Australia. We spent 2 days here which was just enough to go and see some of the places and walks they have to offer in this town.

We really enjoyed the Ivanhoe Crossing which we took our car over multiple times to get some good video and photo footage. It was originally part of the main road through to the town of Wyndham. It is a concrete causeway which is built over the Ord River. The river once again is home to the mighty crocs and with a constant some times heavy flow of water you do not want to break down here. Just after 2 water crossings there is free camping available ….if you want a view with a difference.

Kelly’s knob Lookout gives you a birds eye view of this small town. It is located 2 minutes from town and is a 1 hour return hike straight up the hill. So make sure you wear good shoes and take water its well worth sitting up there and taking in the Landscape that can be taken for the BUNGLE BUNGLES here in Western Australia.

There are so many other walks and look outs to visit on your stay here in Kununurra, once again most are only suited for 4wds .The most frequent tourist that visit this town take tours to Lake Argyle which is an hour drive South East and will be our next destination on our epic journey around oz 🌅🌄

Dam Area just out of town
View from Kelly’s Knob high above the town.

We found a pair of shoes 👟 here no human to be seen . Croc area not sure where they went 🙏
