Litchfield National Park is Located 70 kms south of Darwin. There is so much to take in here if you want to come and see this amazing place . Allow a minimum of 3 days as the park has so much to see and explore. There are several camping grounds in the national park so this will give you easy access to all the areas of the park. Litchfield National Park was declared in 1986 to conserve and manage the pristine tabletop range. The park is approximately 1500 sq km and is named after a British Explorer Fred Litchfield.
We tried to visit all the attractions the park had to offer but ran out of time. The places we did visit are listed above.
The Lost City~ Series of large Sandstone outcrops that evoke remains of ancient civilisation
Magnetic Termite Mounds ~ Hundreds of Magnetic Termite mounds standing as high as 2 meters very impressive. It actually looks like a mini stone hedge
Blyth Homestead Ruins ~ This Homestead is found in the national park and serves as a reminder of the tough conditions the pioneers of this time had to endure. It was also an experience getting to the homestead as you had some deep water crossings to get there.
The many waterfalls here are all unique in their own way. Some like Tolmer falls can only be seen from the lookout area. All the other water falls and and Rockhole can be enjoyed for swimming. They are crystal clear but very refreshing once you are in. In the Monsoon season the Salty crocs do enter the region which is from October to April the sites are inaccessible over this time. So lucky we came in July obviously a safe time to swim. Lucky i read this after enjoying the many swims i had here.
We took a day cruise on the Adelaide Cruises Jumping Crocodile. It was an absolute highlight to see these beautiful reptiles up close…sometimes too close. They sit in the water and all you can see is there eyes staring at you. Interesting thing i learnt was they have a white baby tooth that they never lose. This tooth is responsible of cracking the egg when they are born. Even after the Salty’s hatch their teeth are so sharp they can take off your fingers…so no cuddles for these new borns. The tour took over 1.5 hours and you got to see so many of these beauties along the river sunning themselves and waiting for the boat to arrive so they could be fed and also put on a show. It was well worth the trip out there which took 1.5 hours from our accomodation. The cost for the trip was $70pp there are all types of packages and tours so check it out. Warning keep your limbs securely in the boat you never know where these animals are. Their land speed is 40kph so if you can run that fast away from a croc good on you.
I highly recommend the top end of the Northern Territory there is so much to take in and see while you are here. If you plan on visiting the Litchfield National Park a 4wd with a snorkel is an absolute must so you can see all the attractions and enjoy the deep water crossings . Unfortunately we did not have a chance to go to Darwin so will save it for the next lap around oz. Now to start heading South to go West if that makes sense. Happy Travels
