We have travelled Interstate from my last post of Adels Grove in Queensland and have finally crossed the border into Northern Territory.
We had heard on our travels about the Iconic Pub in Daly Waters so wanted to go check it out. Daly Waters is located 7kms west from the main Stuart Highway, and is 2.5 hours South of Katherine. If you choose to camp here they do not take bookings first in best dressed policy. You book and pay at the pub then you will get put onto site. We arrived at 1030 in the morning and the camp was already half full.
A bit of History on this pub. The pub opened in the 1930s and has been closed several times and changed owners. The new owner Tim has totally overhauled the pub. There are quirky signs found all around the pub.Ladies bras take centre stage hanging high above the bar.The story about the bras started many years ago , a bus load of tourist came to visit the pub and they were dared to take their bras off. Apparently they went through with the dare and it still continues on to today, there are now hundreds of bras displayed .There are also flags from all over the world and a lot of other souvenirs hung all around the bar area. The bar is very spacious and has a small restaurant area to the side and the rowdy out door area where entertainers, singers you name it fill the atmosphere with their talent from 12pm onwards.
The menu runs all day except for meals at night which you can only order from 6pm onwards. Be prepared to wait as they have 3 serving times 6.30/7.30/8pm. Your name is called and you proceed to the bbq area with what feels like hundreds of others to collect your order. We had fish and chips but the signature dish for this pub is Beef and Barra. I could not stomach this type of combination but it looked good plated up with fries and salad. The barra is fresh and gets delivered from a farm in Cape York. The prices are very reasonable and there is a wide selection to choose from. The chicken Schnitzel is also another dish that is enjoyed by all.
Tim the pub owner also owns the Museum which is called Tims Junkyard. At a cost of $3pp there is so much to see. Some of the cars and bikes are limited editions and very rare. People call from all over Australia and the world to sell memorabilia to him.Next up in town is Kevin the Salty Croc who is 7 years old. He likes to sit in the front yard fully secured by a fence of course and have his photo taken.
While walking past the pub we were greeted by the locals having beers on their horses and sharing a yarn, this place has a very relaxed feel about it.
You will see Tim the owner on his motorised scooter ,scooting around all day…right behind him is his horse dolly, the goat and dog trotting closely behind. There are no limits on where these animals can go bar restaurant you name it. The tourist love it here as they are part of the attraction. We stayed one night and sat out the pub having a meal and too many vinos with some people we had just met. It was a great night with lots of entertainment . I Highly recommend this place for a visit or stay it is well worth the experience.
