We had a long and interesting journey from our last destination Ravenshoe to the Mighty Cobbold gorge.Cobbold Gorge is located in far North Queensland’s Gulf Savannah. It is a 6 hour drive from Cairns or Townsville and can be accessed by car or plane. The journey out to the gorge takes you on long winding and corrugated roads, so expect a few more hours added on to your journey as you have to go slow. On arrival our Microwave in the caravan had come unattached from its unit which is very secure so even for the off road caravan this road is very challenging.
When we arrived here the place looked like a mini Oasis. They offer all types of accomodation from camping to Villas. There is also a bar, restaurant and a Infinity Pool which is great as the temperatures even in the winter are still reasonably high. There is so much to see here so for our 2 night stay we tried to do as much as possible. First up was to visit the Quartz Blow lookout on Sunset. This is located 5min drive from our accomodation. When we arrived we were surprised by the amount of couples up on the rock with their wine and cheese waiting for the Sunset . This was a very romantic way to end the day…
The next morning we took advantage of the hikes around the gorge and went for a 5km return walk to Russells Lookout that looked out over the camp and all the vast riverine environment, sandstone escarpment and trees lined as far as the eye can see.
In the afternoon we were booked on the Cobbold Gorge Tour cost $100 per person and takes 3 hours. As we entered the gorge by bus to start the tour off with we were taken away by its breathtaking natural wonder. The tours are guided only to protect the land and of course for your safety. On the tour you learn about the geological processes that has formed the gorge , take a traverse over their glass bridge and also take a boat tour . As our tour was in the afternoon we could see the changing colours on the sandstone as the sun was going down which was spectacular. The tour consists of two hours walking through the gorge and one hour on the boat. It is so peaceful on the boat and we saw 2 baby crocodiles which were very cute. Just keep your hands inside the boat as mama must be near by.
After the tour we decided to have a well earned dip in the infinity pool with a glass of wine. This place has so much to offer and i am glad we took this long journey out here to see another wonder of this country.
