After leaving Charleville we continued west to Barcaldine a 400km+ 🚗. We chose to stop over one night to break up our long drive towards Long Reach again still in the outback Queensland further west.
Our camping ground Roses and Things was a Boutique camping ground that only catered for 12 camp sites. They also have a cafe attached to the camping ground which is very popular here in this town for the magnificent fresh produce and food. Unfortunately we stayed on the only weekend it was closed….such a shame. We headed off into town to see all the attractions this small town population of 2900 had to offer. First up was the Tree of Knowledge which is a heritage listed oak tree located in the main street of Barcaldine. The town was the headquarters in 1891 for the Australian Shearers Strike and in 1892 the reading of the Labour Party leading to the formation on the Australian Labour Party (ALP) as it stands today.
We then went on to visit the Australian Workers Heritage Centre which gives an insight and honours all workers past, present and future. It is a well set up centre with plenty to see and also has a cafe offering amazing looking burgers…looks like a must if only we had not eaten before coming out.
The town was very quiet due to it being a Sunday but it was sad to see that most of the pubs and shops had been closed down permanently not sure if it was due to Covid.
Just out of town is a place called Lara Wetlands located on the Landsborough Hwy South of Barcaldine. This was closed when we came in to town due to recent weather activities….. called rain. Lara Wetlands offers fresh Artesian water and camping under the stars another place to put on your outback places to visit.
This place is good for a stop over on your way out west and take in the history. The food supplies are not that good not many supermarkets so STOCK UP.
