Trilby Station

Location: Louth New South Wales (Outback)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

After a very heroic drive by Paulie we arrived at this beautiful family owned outback station. Warning do not drive on dirt roads even if there is a trickle of rain, you will end up going for a long slide,Or even better see the caravan out your side car window.

Trilby Station is located in the outback of New South Wales. The closest town in 125km away mainly on dirt road so be sure to check the forecast before you set out on this adventure. The station is owned by Liz and Gary Murray 5th Generation. They also have a fantastic team of volunteers to help out with the grounds, assisting guests with questions etc….or just having a great yarn over some wines which we embraced. Thank you Ed and Judy.

The property sits on the Darling River and is 320,000 acres which hosts sheep and goats….and yabbies. The owner Gary flys his Cessna Plane each day to assess the property and make sure everything is in order. Having your pilots licence out here is essential as over the rainy season they can not leave the property for up to 4 months sometimes due to the rising river closing off roads. So if you live out here you have to be truly organised and be fully stocked up.

The Station offers a lot of different types of accomodation. There is Powered/Unpowered camping sites Shearers Bunkhouse, Cottages so take your pick. The unpowered camping sites are down on the darling river and very private so there is something for everyone. Liz the owner also offers meals on wheels (good country tucker) which is an added bonus if you just want to chill.

We stayed here for 2 days and they offer a tour around the property called the Mud Run. The tour takes over 2 hours and you get to see the old homestead a few of the property’s dams and take in the history of this place. On our way around we set a yabbie net in both of the dams and caught 7. We could only take home 3 as the other ones were undersized. They are very feisty little creatures indeed. Our entree that night was yes yabbies and they were absolutely magnificent.

We really enjoyed our time here at Trilby Station. We chose this place as it was in the outback and a different kind of camping experience. I think with the road trip in we got more that we bargained for. I would highly recommend this place its a great spot.

Off we go back to QLD for a month of the road. Next Stop Charlotte Plains……..
